New Yorkers for Racially Just Public Schools Statement on Appointment of Kamar Samuels as NYC Schools Chancellor

January 20, 2026

We look forward to working with Chancellor Kamar Samuels to build a school system that honors our students, educators, staff, and parents. His appointment represents a monumental opportunity to create a high-quality, racially just public education system in NYC.

We are ready to partner with our new Chancellor to develop pathways that ensure students, parents, and educators have a real voice in how our schools are governed. While we are encouraged by the vision for our schools that Chancellor Samuels has begun to articulate, we believe the selection process represents a missed opportunity to meaningfully democratize the appointment of the Chancellor and to build broader public trust and support for the new administration. We also seek clarification on Mayor Mamdani’s apparent reversal on Mayoral Control and hope there is continued dialogue about the value of this particular policy.

We remain steadfast in the vision outlined in our policy roadmap, which calls for equitable funding, safe schools, integrated and culturally responsive schools, an end to privatization, and the establishment of democratic school governance structures. Our children are worth it.
